LAMDA
London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art

LAMDA exams are open to everyone, with no age restrictions and can be taken in Performance (Musical Theatre & Acting) and Communication (Verse & Prose, Public Speaking & Reading for Performance).
Founded in 1861, LAMDA (London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art) is a world-leading drama school and one of the UK's oldest and most respected awarding bodies.
A LAMDA Exam is the performance and communication equivalent of a music exam and will assess skills in speech, drama, communication and performance from introductory level, through to Grade 8. Students receive a certificate, a written report and mark (Pass, Merit, Distinction).

These exams and qualifications are not only recognised by Ofqual, but internationally too and are equivalents to standard qualifications.
Level 1 exams are the equivalent of low grades at GCSE, Level 2 are high grades at GCSE and Level 3: Bronze (Grade 6), Silver (Grade 7) and Gold (Grade 8), are the equivalent of AS / A-Levels, and count towards the UCAS points system when applying to universities and colleges.

Students can also use their LAMDA lessons and exam preparation time for the skills section of their Duke of Edinburgh award and can set themselves the goal of passing the exam at the end of it.

LAMDA performance classes take place on Saturdays:
-
Level One (Grades 1, 2 & 3): 10am - 11am
-
Level Two (Grades 4 & 5): 11am - 12pm
-
Level Three (Grades 6, 7 & 8): 12pm - 1pm
Class sizes are limited, allowing for a mix of group work and one-on-one coaching within each session. One-to-one sessions are also available for more personalised instruction.

LAMDA exams increase confidence, self-esteem and creativity, provide a broader vocabulary and enhanced memory and recall, and teach core performance and communication techniques. Learners will develop their vocal, physical, and interpretive skills whilst having fun!
Training for an exam as part of a small group provides a collaborative environment where students can learn from each other's experiences, share insights, support and encourage one another and receive and offer constructive feedback.
During the exam, learners will perform their practical pieces followed by a discussion with the examiner about the material (this is known as the knowledge section). Pieces and questions differ depending on the exam and grade being taken. Learners can choose to take performance exams on their own or with a friend.
As they progress through the grades, acting students will study acting methods and the influence of theatre practitioners such as Stanislavski. Musical theatre students will study the history of musical theatre by performing songs from a range of eras, and by researching the work and influence of one of its composers or lyricists. Verse and Prose students will analyse poetry and study figurative language, emphasis, modulation and the form, metre and rhythm of poetry.
